Is AI Changing How Customers Find Your Business?

Aug 5, 2026
Is AI Changing How Customers Find Your Business?

Have you spent years building your presence on Google, only to hear that AI is changing how people search? Plenty of business owners are asking the same question.

The way people search has changed quickly. Rather than working through a page of Google links, more customers now hand their question to a tool like ChatGPT and let it narrow the options for them. Getting ahead of that change now is what keeps your business easy to find as customers shift how they search.

This article looks at how search is changing and what it means for whether customers can still find your business.

How Customers Are Searching Differently in 2026

The way people look for local businesses has changed faster in the past year than it has in a long time. A couple of shifts stand out, and both of them affect whether a customer finds you.

People Are Asking AI Instead of Scrolling Results

A year ago, only 6% of people used AI tools to find local businesses. Today that number is 45%, according to BrightLocal's 2026 research. Rather than scrolling through a page of links, more and more customers now ask ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity for a direct question and get a single recommendation back.

Ranking on Google Doesn't Guarantee AI Visibility

There's a second shift that surprises a lot of business owners. SOCi's 2026 research found that in retail, only 45% of the brands leading in regular Google search also showed up among the businesses AI tools recommend most.

Doing well on Google used to be the whole game. Now it's only part of it, and the businesses that understand that early are the ones staying visible.

What AI Search Means for Your Business

AI search shifts may seem technical, but what it comes down to is whether or not your business profile comes up as an answer to your customer’s questions.

Most Businesses Aren't on AI's Radar Yet

SOCi looked at more than 350,000 business locations and found that ChatGPT recommends only about 1.2% of them. Most businesses simply aren't set up in a way that lets AI tools recommend them with confidence. That's a real gap, and it's also an opening.

The businesses that take action now, while their competitors are still figuring it out, are the ones that will show up when it counts.

AI Pulls from Your Entire Online Presence

AI tools don't only read your website. They look at your reviews, your directory listings, and the places your business gets mentioned across the web, and they use all of it to decide whether to trust you enough to recommend you. When that information is scattered or doesn't line up, it's harder for AI to point a customer your way.

What Still Works as Search Evolves

The shift toward AI search doesn't erase what you've already built. The foundation that helped you on Google is the same foundation that helps you with AI.

Strong Local SEO Is Still the Foundation

The basics you've been building still carry weight. An active Google Business Profile, regular reviews, accurate listings, and fresh content are the foundation of what AI visibility is built on. None of the work you've already done goes out the window. It's the starting point for everything that comes next.

Clear, Consistent Information Wins

AI tools cross-check your details against your website, your Google Business Profile, online directories, and social platforms. When those details line up and your content answers what customers are asking, AI can point people to you with confidence.

Stay Ahead of the Curve with Legend

AI is transforming how people discover businesses, and adjusting now is what puts your business in front of customers tomorrow.

You don't have to track every shift yourself or guess at what AI tools are looking for. With the right foundation in place, your business can stay visible whether someone finds you on Google or asks an AI tool for a recommendation.

If you want to make sure customers can still find you as search keeps changing, let's talk about where your business stands today and where you want it to be. Schedule a call!
